Resilience and Gold Medals: Paralympian Aaron Phipps Inspires Year 10 and 11 Students

Our Year 10 and 11 students recently attended a powerful assembly led by Aaron Phipps, a Gold Medal Paralympian wheelchair rugby player. Aaron visited the school to share his extraordinary life story, offering students a firsthand look at the impact of resilience, mindset, and perseverance.

Aaron’s journey is one of incredible highs and challenging lows. He spoke openly about becoming an amputee at the age of 15 due to Meningitis - the same age as many of the students in the audience. He reflected honestly on his time as a teenager, admitting that he wasn't always making the best choices and "had to nearly die" before he began to truly realize his potential.

The assembly covered several defining moments in his career, including:

  • Elite Dedication: Balancing a full-time job while training 12 times a week to earn selection for the London 2012 Paralympics.

  • Sheer Determination: His attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in a wheelchair, which resulted in him crawling for four days when the terrain became impassable for his equipment.

  • The Road to Gold: The transition from being ranked 5th in the world with limited resources to winning a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Games.

By sharing his transition from a struggling teenager to a world-class athlete, Aaron provided our students with a roadmap for overcoming adversity. His message was clear: with the right mindset, it is possible to transform your circumstances and achieve the extraordinary.
