Race for Life 2018

What is Race for Life?

Race for Life is part of Cancer Research UK and is an event which supports the scientific research behind beating cancer.

As the name suggests, Race for Life is a running event. However, as long as you complete 3k, you can walk, run, skip or jump your way to the finish line!

Race for Life relies on sponsorship donations in order to help with cancer research, and it is a girl’s only event.

There are over two hundred types of cancer affecting people of all ages right now. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, which means every single pound donated makes a difference to Cancer Research UK’s ground-breaking work.

What will be happening?

On Wednesday 18th July 2018, female students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 will be completing the 3k run, running 15 laps on our 200m track (they also have the option to complete the 5k run, if they wish).

Everyone will receive medals for completing Race for Life!

During break and lunch, there will also be a cake sale with students encouraged to bake and bring in cakes to sell to help raise money. For anyone interested in selling cakes, please see Miss James.

Two additional activities will be held during the afternoon: UV Football and Clubbercise.

UV Football

Girls from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 are being given the opportunity to take part in UV Football in the Sports Hall, delivered by Pompey in the Community.

Students wishing to take part will need to collect a team sheet from Miss James.

8 players in a Squad.
6 players in a Team.
£1 per player = £8 per Squad!

(If you do not have a team or don’t have enough players but would still like to play, please give your name to Miss James and she will form a team for you. Bring your £1 to sign up to this)

The event is first come first served. There are only 8 team spaces available. Hand in team sheets and money to Miss James in the PE Office.

During Lesson 5, a limited number of students will be able to take part in Clubbercise.

The event will be £5 entry per person to take part.
This works out as:

  • £2 towards the instructor
  • £1 for the glow sticks students can take home
  • £2 towards Cancer Research

Students who are interested can collect a letter from the PE Office.

Money and letter must be given into the silver box on the middle floor at Student Reception, and must be received by Monday 2nd July.

There are only 70 spaces available.

Giving Something Back for your Efforts

We understand that baking cakes can take up a lot of time, for both students and parents. So, we thought we would give something back for the person who:

  • Bakes the best cake
  • Bakes the MOST cakes
  • Who raises the most money
  • Who runs the most laps
  • Player of the UV Football Tournament
  • Clubbercise Queen

A Love2Shop voucher.

How to Get Involved

There are two ways to raise money for Race for Life:

  • Sponsorship Forms: Forms were given out with letters to students. Money to be collected as you receive donations. A small envelope to attach to it is advised. If you have lost or didn’t collect a donation form, download one here.
  • We are asking for most of our donations to try and go through the online giving page, if possible, to help track our progress. Click here to take you to the page.

A letter was sent to parents about all events on Wednesday 18th July, but is also available here for those who may have missed it.
